Around the turn of the century the school became a co-ed institution and the school's name was changed Athens College. Nearly 45 years later, control of the school was taken over by the state of Alabama and the school's name was changed again, this time to Athens State College. In 1998, the college took on another name to reflect its new status as a university, Athens State University. In recent years, a Board of Trustees has been established as Athens has become an individual, self-reliant upper-level college.
