Birmingham-Southern College
Established in 1856, Birmingham-Southern College (also referred to as BSC) is a private college that focuses on undergraduate liberal arts educatio. This fully accredited college has a strong affiliation with the Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. BSC is a smaller college, with less than 1,500 students that come from 35 states and over 16 countries around the world. Because of its small size, there is a very small student to faculty ratio, allowing for a more personalized education. This college of liberal arts has been ranked top of the list in the United States by U.S. News & World report several times. One reason the college is so highly ranked is because a high majority of the school’s professors have earned either the highest degree offered in their field, and/or their doctorate degree in their field of study.BSC employe a new philosophy in education. This new curriculum is called “Explorations”. Rather than just teaching the basics, the college emphasizes the “doing” part of learning. The class requirements include effective communication, connecting what students learn to the real world, engaging in the political and social side of life, learning to creatively solve difficult issues, and learning to self-teach and being self-driven. The idea is to completely prepare students for what the real world, employers and graduate schools are looking for in prospective employees and/or students.
BSC is well know for several special academic programs it offers. These include the Donald C. Harrison Honors Program, Entrepreneurship Program, Donald C. Harrison Honors Program, Contract Learning Program, Service-Learning program and Vails Fellowships program.
In order to enrich the learning experience at BSC, the college encourages students to get involved in one of several academic, student and special interest clubs and organizations. These include, but are not limited to, the Art Student Leagues, Debate Society, Bass Fishing Team, Honor Council, Film Club, Muli-Cultural Awareness Organization, Student Government Association, College Democrats, College Republicans, and Black Student Union.
The college is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). In addition, several of its individual academic school maintain their own professional accreditation.
