Michigan State University

Michigan State University (MSU) is a public university in East Lansing, Michigan. As one of America's Public Ivy universities, MSU is considered to be one of the best public universities in the country. It is the ninth largest university in the U.S., enrolling over 49,000 students and employing almost 3,000 faculty members. MSU pioneered such academic programs as hospitality business, packaging, telecommunication, and supply chain management. Today, MSU offers more than 200 academic programs.

Michigan State University operates under a rolling admissions policy, meaning applicants can submit their admissions applications anytime during a comparatively large window of time. MSU's deadline for early admissions falls in October. U.S. News & World Report includes MSU among its list of "selective" universities. MSU receives about 30,000 freshman applications each year, and admits roughly 69% of them. The average high school GPA of these new freshmen was 3.62.

Roughly 90% of MSU students are residents of the State of Michigan. The remaining students come from all 50 United States, and from 130 countries throughout the world. During the 2011-2012 school year, MSU enrolled almost 6,000 international students. The countries most represented in the same school year were China, India, Korea, Canada, and Taiwan.

Michigan State has a student-faculty ratio of 19:1. The university's study abroad program is the largest in the United States (among single-campus universities). Each year, the program sends roughly 2,500 students to more than 60 countries on all continents (including Antarctica).

The Academic Ranking of World Universities ranks MSU as the 92nd best university in the world. U.S. News & World Report ranks MSU the 72nd best university in the country, and 29th among public universities. In 2011, QS World University Rankings gave MSU the ranking of 164th in the world.
