Monterey Institute of International Studies
Housed in Monterey, California, the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) was founded in 1955. It was added as a graduate school to Middlebury College in 2010. This school offers study in international business, international policy, language teaching, environmental policy, translation and interpretation.The school breaks its graduate schools into two areas: The Graduate School of International Policy and Management and the Graduate School of Translation, Interpretation and Language Education. There are five research centers on campus as well. MIIS offers MA (Masters of Arts), MBA (Master of Business Administration) and (MPA) Masters of Public Administration. In addition, a variety of certificates in many disciplines are also available. The Institute is known for producing Fulbright Fellows and in 2011 had more per capita than at any other grad school in the country.
The Defense Language Institute, which is several blocks away, has earned Monterey the title of “Language Capital of the World.” As many as 50 different languages are taught on campus. Around 30 percent of the student body of 700 is international. Many of the American students who are enrolled have worked, studied or lived outside the U.S., utilizing experience in programs such as Rotary International, the Peace Corps and AFS Intercultural Programs.
