Oakwood University
Oakwood University is a fully accredited, privately owned and operated university affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It is located in Huntsville, Alabama and is a historically all-black university that offers associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs.Oakwood is consistently ranked within the top 20 higher education institutions in the United States that offer medical schooling to African-American students. Not only is the university well known as historically black college, it's also recognized for being among the top Baccalaureate Colleges in the South and one of the best undergraduate universities.
Oakwood offers several pre-professional undergraduate degree programs designed to prepare student to enter graduate level programs in medicine, dentistry and other allied health sciences. Bachelor degree curriculum offered through the university's department of Biological Sciences, including Biology, Biology Education, Natural Science and Biomedical Sciences courses, are designed to prepare students for graduate school. Much of the curriculum and many of the undergraduate degrees offered through the Department of Chemistry are also designed to help students prepare for graduate level education and training opportunities.
Spiritual enhancement is a huge part of the mission of the Oakwood University. In addition to producing career oriented professional, community leaders and academic scholars, the school is committed to developing “servant leaders” within the student body. Many programs are offered to students for just this purpose. Chapel services, Adventist Youth Society, Sabbath services, student missionary programs, worship within the dormitories as well as clubs and activities are commissioned and designed to enrich the spirituality of Oakwood’s students.
While Oakwood is primarily and undergraduate institution, it began offering graduate degree in 2008 through its Department of Religion & Theology. Today it offers graduate degrees in pastoral studies.
Oakwood University offers a unique study abroad program that allows students to study at any other Adventist university outside the U.S. While studying abroad students are able to earn credits that will count toward their degree at Oakwood. Participating colleges are located in Mexico, France, Spain, Argentina, Australia, Germany, Japan, Greece, Ukraine, and Thailand. The most popular study abroad locations are in Argentina, Mexico, Greece, Spain and France.
