Located in Springfield, Illinois, the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) is a public university offering an array of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. UIS enrolls approximately 5,000 students. In the past, UIS was an upper-division and graduate university; now, the school accepts freshmen, transfer, and graduate students.There are 23 undergraduate and 20 master's programs available at UIS, as well as a doctoral program in Public Administration. Since 1999, UIS has offered many of its degree programs and courses entirely online. In 2007, the university received the Award for Excellence in Institution-Wide Online Teaching and Learning from the Sloan Consortium. In 2008, UIS received the Ralph E. Gomory Award for Quality Online Education as well as The Society for New Communications Research's Award for Excellence in Online Reputation Management. Three of UIS's professors--Emeritus Ray Schroeder, Burks Oakley, and Karen Swan--have received the Sloan Consortium's award for Most Outstanding Achievement by an Individual in Online Learning. Additionally, the Guide to Online Schools' Online College Rankings ranks UIS 11th on its list of the best online universities in the United States.
