Conflict Resolution & Mediation Degree
Conciliators, arbitrators, and mediators resolve conflicts. The mediation process typically takes place in formally structured hearings which employ many of the same formalities as a courtroom. There are, however, many advantages to resolving conflicts through mediation rather than through court. Mediation is typically faster, more confidential, and less costly than courtroom proceedings, and provides the conflicting parties with more control over the resolution. Professional mediators are trained to foster constructive dialogue and empathy between disputants, and to find solutions to difficult problems. Those interested in pursuing a mediation career have the option of obtaining a professional certificate, a bachelor's degree, or a graduate degree. The American Arbitration Association is one group that offers mediation certificate programs. Entry-level mediation jobs can be acquired with a bachelor's degree, but those with master's degrees will have better job opportunities. Many traditionally campus-based schools are now offering mediation and conflict resolution degrees that can be completed online.
Even though some programs can be completed online, most graduate degree programs in conflict resolution will require students to spend some time on campus or fulfilling an internship. Many online programs allow students to enroll on a full-time or part-time basis. At the graduate level student often learn about mediation, crisis management, ethnic conflicts, peacemaking techniques, and resolving organizational conflict. Graduate level program can take between 18 months and 5 years to complete.
