International Relations Degree

International relations specialists focus on the relationships among sovereign nations, with focus on how financial, legal, political and trade relations include those relations. As international relations is an interdisciplinary field, students often have the opportunity to take a wide range of coursework including political science, history, economics, languages, sociology, anthropology, environmental studies and geography.

Professionals with a degree in international relations often work for the U.S. Foreign Service, nonprofit human rights organizations, or various government agencies, such as the Departments of State, Defense, Commerce, and Agriculture, or the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). However, they also work in all areas of the private sector as well as managers, analysts, liaisons and consultants. Most positions relating to international relations are filled by individuals holding graduate degrees. International relations specialists who conduct research and teach at universities hold doctorate degrees. Many students who pursue a bachelor's degree in international relations go on to earn a graduate degree in law, business, economics or politics.
